Almost nothing pleases the American palette like a succulent steak dinner, whether the surroundings are rowdy and fun, hip and trendy, or well appointed and opulent.
Choices for a mouthful of juicy meat abound in Atlanta, but here are just three options that hit very different notes on atmosphere, while finding that same comfortable place on our tongues and in our tummies.
KAYSONS:
With the opening of the intown Wal-Mart, several OTP chains headed inbound. When you first walk into this newest location of Kaysons Grille in the District on Howell Mill, friendly smiles and an upscale atmosphere are the first indications that this is no regular sports bar. Some 40 televisions, including one in every booth, are awesome.
But we’re here for the food, and Kaysons does not disappoint your palette or your wallet. Starters and sandwiches abound, but go for the grill. The fall-off-the-bone barbecue ribs should not be missed, and the salmon, country fried steak, tequila lime or Smoky Mountain chicken are all amazing.
But seriously, let’s talk steak.
Char-grilled tenderloin and ribeye are just the beginning. Try the Bourbon Street Ribeye for a real kick. It’s smothered in “Big Daddy Sauce,” seasoned with Cajun Spice and topped with an Onion Ring. Be sure and leave room for a wide array of side items and a long list of desserts.
SUN DIAL:
Thinking Mother’s Day? Impress visiting moms — or your next date — atop downtown’s Westin hotel. This rotating restaurant offers gorgeous vistas of the entire city while you dine. The creative menu features artfully prepared steaks to sink your teeth into. Oh yeah, and you can get chicken prepared six ways to Sunday, as well as a host of other American classics, if you must forego the beef. We also recommend the shrimp salad to start or to share.
Arrive early to enjoy the separate rotating bar below the restaurant, or visit on weekends to hear live jazz that infuses the whole atmosphere with energy. It’s a neat place most any time, but do know that it’s considered fancy, so jackets and ties are recommended for the guys.
BONES:
As we move up the price ladder, there are plenty of choices for a great, expensive steak in Atlanta. This pricey place is one of them, and it’s worth every penny to impress clients, visitors or any highbrow guest on your list.
Think of a sprawling, richly decorated and moody London men’s club when you start to consider this place for lunch or dinner. And as if you’re a member of this “club,” expect fabulous service that leaves you wanting for nothing — even a cigar-friendly bar where you can imagine fat-cat wheeling and dealing in its recesses.
By the time dinner arrives, your knife and fork will itch to slice into a perfectly cooked filet mignon, bone-in ribeye or the behemoth 20-ounce New York strip. The steaks here are simply second to none. Sides like roasted garlic mashed potatoes are way beyond standard fare, and an excellent wine list ensures a complete, luxurious experience.
