FROM BREAKING OUT the tri-toned bowling shoes to stuffing divas with dollar bills at a variety revue, there are plenty of ways to get a philanthropic fix next week.
The 2nd annual Atlanta Cotillion Cabaret at Red Chair Restaurant & Video Lounge on Aug. 14 features four Cotillion beauties covering songs as varied as Broadway musical numbers, Top 40 hits, ‘80s pop and country-western, according to Harrison Perry, Atlanta Cotillion co-chair for fund-raising and public relations.
And the pins at Express Bowling Lane are in trouble Aug. 19, when about 250 people are expected to turn out for the 2nd annual “Pins for PALS” fund-raiser. Some $8,100 was raised last year for Pets Are Loving Support, according to organizers.
Both events include silent auctions. Proceeds from the Cotillion event go to AID Atlanta, and monies raised from the bowling event go to Pets Are Loving Support, an organization that provides pet care for people living with chronic illnesses including AIDS.
THERE ARE A COUPLE of getaway opportunities up for bid in the cabaret silent auction, including a four-night cruise for two aboard the gay RSVP Cruise Lines, and a two-night deluxe cabin rental at the Southern Comfort Cabin Rentals of Blue Ridge.
The highest bidder for the “A Legendary Event” prize wins dinner for 10 prepared and served in their home, says Perry, who performs as “Ginger Christina Summers” during the cabaret.
The cabaret includes two performances each by Perry, Steve Dondero as “Queen Forsythia O’Hara,” Greg Whitmire as “Betty Sue O’Hara” and Edward Holifield as “Ashley ‘Teensy’ Burnside.”
“Sylvia Louise” —aka Jeffrey Powell, as seen on Style Network’s “Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?”—will emcee the event.
Last year’s crowd was standing room only. Harrison says he expects a similar turnout f
or this weekend’s cabaret, but he hopes to increase the more than $5,000 raised last year. Proceeds from the silent auction, along with tips the performers receive and 20 percent of Red Chair drink sales, go to the Cotillion’s cause.
STELLAR AND AWFUL bowlers get a chance to shine at “Pins for PALS,” with prizes going to the best and worst scoring 6-person team, says Laura Kay, development director for PALS.
Kay is also a member of the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, whose singles group is sponsoring “Pins for PALS” for the second year in a row.
“Everybody just fell in love with us doing PALS,” Kay says. “It’s just really nice to see how everyone can come together for one cause.”
Bowlers are treated to pizza and a flowing fountain of silky chocolate in which they can bath pieces of fruit and other items.
Organizers expect to double the $8,100 dollars “Pins for PALS” raised in 2004, thanks to a jam-packed silent auction and a jaw-dropping raffle, according to Kay.
The winning raffle ticket holder receives an extended weekend stay at a private Caribbean island near the country of Belize. The island resort, Cayo Espanto, donated the $2,200 per night package, which includes access to private beaches, pools and a personal chef over the four-day stay.
Raffle tickets are $5 each, or five for $20.
The silent auction also features getaways, including Air Tran-donated flights from Atlanta to San Francisco and Miami.
Items in the silent auction range from about $20 to $950, and satisfy a range of tastes. Several pieces of jewelry are on tap, as well as sports memorabilia signed by Chipper Jones and John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler.
