The fifth season of HBO’s gay-inclusive critical darling “Six Feet Under” got underway June 6 with a message from producers: they’re calling it quits.

The gay team of executive producers, creator Alan Ball and his professional partner Alan Poul, planned the series with a limited run in mind, according to Poul.

The show remains popular with gay fans for its intelligent stories and the realistically depicted love affair between funeral director David Fisher (Michael C. Hall) and former cop Keith Charles (Mathew St. Patrick).

Producers promise “shocking” plot twists to end the series, making it worth a switch to Monday nights at 9 p.m. Repeats of new Monday episodes are slated for the following Sunday in case diehard fans want to stick to old habits.

After four years of dramatic changes for Keith and David, the pair ironically starts off the final season as the only characters in happy circumstances.

Only time will tell if that’s how they end up when the show gets buried for good late this summer.

Two HOT young actors with careers on the rise offered two very different reactions to their recent same-sex kisses onscreen.

JESSE BRADFORD, the wholesome-looking stud from “Swimfan” and “Bring It On,” says that he turned down a chance to play a gay character in the film “Rules of Attraction” and always wondered if he turned down the part because the character was gay.

He apparently felt better about himself after accepting a gay role in the upcoming movie “Heights” — until it came time for his big same-sex kiss.

“There are certain risks involved,” he told the New York Daily News gossip column. “But it was one of the most heterosexual reaffirming moments of my life. Like, ‘Oh, that’s why I don’t like this. That’s why I always figured I wouldn’t like this.’ Now I know. Now I know for sure.”

On the other side of the fence, screen kitten BRITTANY MURPHY tells the British edition of Maxim magazine that of her cinematic smooches — which include a scene of simulated sex with rapper EMINEM in “8 Mile” — the two most noteworthy were with women.

“I will admit that my most memorable onscreen kiss was with REESE WITHERSPOON in ‘Freeway,’ just because we were laughing so much,” she says about her role in the 1996 independent movie. “And my longest was with Joanne Vannicola for this [2000 television] movie called ‘Common Ground.’”

The next person who may get to have a gay ol’ time on camera is veteran actor RICHARD DREYFUSS, who according to the Hollywood Reporter, signed on to play a gay character in director Wolfgang Peterson’s remake of the 1972 shipwreck thriller “The Poseidon Adventure.”

Like the original, this is the story of a capsized cruise ship and the struggle of the survivors to stay alive.

Also lining up some noteworthy talent is Showtime’s lesbian drama ‘THE L WORD,’ which signed up a number of prominent directors to film episodes for its pending third season.

Gay directors slated behind the show’s camera include: “D.E.B.S.” director Angela Robinson, “The Laramie Project” creator Moisés Kaufman, Rose Troche from “Go Fish,” and “Boys Don’t Cry” director Kimberly Pierce.
